As part of its commitment to fostering talent and supporting young engineers studying engineering or aerospace, CATEC is backing the UVigo Aerotech team from the School of Aeronautical and Space Engineering at the University of Vigo, which comprises engineering students who develop and present their models and prototypes of aircraft, drones and space rockets, as well as their associated technologies, at the main national and international university competitions in this field, such as the Air Cargo Challenge, XtraChallenge, EuRoc and SURTAM, amongst others.
The aim of all this is to raise the profile of the creative and innovative work and activities carried out by these young university students, whose technological developments and projects not only enable them to compete for and be in the running for prestigious awards in the student aerospace sector, but also to support them in the final stage of their studies before completing their degree and entering the job market, where they will be able to develop more complex technologies and contribute the knowledge and experience they have gained through this team and the activities in which they participate.
One of the most recent competitions in which the UVigo Aerotech team has taken part was SURTAM 2026, held at the end of April at the UPV’s Higher Technical School of Engineering, which brought together nearly 200 students from 14 university rocket teams from across Spain, establishing itself as the major national gathering for the university aerospace sector. At this event, the UVigo Aerotech team presented their rocket and UAV projects, attended talks and workshops by leading organisations and companies, and visited firms in the sector, as well as holding networking sessions with other teams and young aerospace engineers.
Among the upcoming competitions in which the University of Vigo team will participate are the Air Cargo Challenge 2026 in Stuttgart (Germany), Europe’s largest student model aircraft competition, taking place from 30 June to 3 July, where they will present their latest drone, Flamingus; or the L1 Competition in Huesca, where university students from all over Spain will gather on 18 and 19 July to present their Viradinha MkII rocket. Furthermore, their upcoming projects include the construction of a VTOL and the parallel development of their own morphing wings.
